(And Why Every Small Business Needs a Plan)
(Originally posted: 2021. Revised/updated: 2026)
If you’ve ever chosen one restaurant over another because one had 400 glowing Google reviews and the other had six… congratulations. You’ve done exactly what your customers are doing.
Reviews have become one of the biggest trust signals online.
Whether someone finds you through Google Search, your Google Business Profile, Facebook, or even AI-powered search tools, they’re looking for reassurance that you’re the right choice before they ever contact you.
The good news?
If you’re already doing great work, you don’t need fake reviews, complicated software, or awkward sales pitches.
You simply need a system.
Your Customers Trust Other Customers
You can spend hours writing the perfect website.
You can invest in professional branding.
You can post on social media every day.
But nothing carries the same weight as hearing another customer say:
“They were amazing to work with.”
That’s called social proof.
People naturally look for proof that others have had a positive experience before making a decision themselves. Reviews provide exactly that, often making the difference between someone clicking your website or your competitor’s.
Reviews Help Your Visibility on Google
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is:
“Reviews don’t affect SEO.”
That’s only partly true.
Reviews alone won’t magically put your website at the top of Google.
However, they do play an important role in your local online presence.
A healthy stream of genuine reviews helps:
- Build trust with potential customers
- Improve your Google Business Profile
- Encourage more clicks from search results
- Show Google your business is active and engaging with customers
Google has repeatedly emphasized that businesses should focus on earning authentic reviews from real customers — not buying them or offering incentives. Responding to reviews also demonstrates that you’re engaged with your audience.
Fresh Reviews Beat Old Reviews
Here’s something many business owners overlook.
Having fifty five-star reviews from 2022 isn’t nearly as impressive as having steady reviews coming in every month.
People want to know:
“Are they still providing great service today?”
Consistency matters.
A business that receives one or two authentic reviews every month often appears healthier than one that received a burst of reviews years ago and then went silent.
Don’t Be Afraid of the Occasional Negative Review
No business is perfect.
In fact, a business with hundreds of perfect five-star reviews can sometimes make people wonder if they’re all real.
The occasional less-than-perfect review gives you an opportunity to demonstrate professionalism.
When you respond politely, acknowledge concerns, and show you’re willing to help, future customers are paying attention.
Many people read the business owner’s response just as carefully as the review itself. If you would like more information on how to respond to negative reviews, you can check out our article on just that!
The Biggest Reason Businesses Don’t Get Reviews
Most clients are happy.
They’re simply busy.
After you’ve solved their problem, they’re thinking about getting back to work—not leaving a review.
That’s why asking matters.
Do not beg.
Definitely do not bribe (more on this later)
Just ask.
The businesses with the most reviews usually aren’t necessarily the ones doing the best work.
They’re the ones who consistently remember to ask.
Make Leaving a Review Easy
If someone has to hunt around to find where to leave a review, many simply won’t bother.
Instead:
- Send them a direct Google review link (or Yelp, or Facebook, or BBB, etc).
- Include it in your email signature.
- Add it to your invoices.
- Put a QR code in your office or on printed material.
- Mention it during your follow-up.
The easier you make it, the more likely people are to leave one.
Respond to Every Review
Yes… even the five-star ones.
A simple thank you tells future customers that you’re paying attention. When someone leaves a thoughtful review, take a minute to personalize your response. It helps build relationships and shows potential customers that real people are behind the business.
One Important Thing to Avoid
Google has become much better at detecting fake or manipulated reviews.
Avoid:
- Buying reviews
- Offering discounts/prizes in exchange for reviews
- Asking only for five-star reviews
- Having staff or family members review your business
- Review swaps with other businesses
Instead, simply invite every genuine customer to share their honest experience.
Authentic reviews are worth far more than dozens of suspicious ones.
A Simple Review System Beats Good Intentions
The businesses that consistently grow their online reputation aren’t lucky. They’ve built asking for reviews into their regular process.
Maybe it’s an email after a completed project.
Maybe it’s part of their invoice.
Maybe it’s a quick follow-up text.
Whatever the method, consistency wins.
Because every review doesn’t just help the next customer trust you…
…it helps the next customer find you.
