Tag – You’re It! Getting more exposure on Facebook

If you want more people to see your business on Facebook, start by helping other businesses get seen first.

This might not be the advice you were expecting.

Most business owners I talk to are trying to get more visibility on Facebook. They’re thinking about what to post, how often to post, whether their captions are good enough… all of that.

And sure, those things matter.

But one of the easiest ways to get more eyes on your business has nothing to do with posting about yourself at all.

It comes down to how you show up for other businesses.

Why tagging works so well for local businesses in Niagara

If you’re a business owner here in Niagara—whether you’re in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Welland, or somewhere nearby—you already know how relationship-driven things are.

People ask for recommendations.
They notice who supports who.
They remember who helped them.

So when you make a habit of recommending and tagging other businesses, you’re doing more than being helpful. You’re building a reputation as someone who is connected, supportive, and easy to work with.

And that kind of visibility sticks.

What tagging actually looks like in real life

This doesn’t have to be complicated.

It usually looks like things you’re already doing… just with a bit more intention.

You see someone asking for a recommendation in a group? Tag a business you trust instead of just typing their name.

You grab coffee with another business owner and have a great conversation? Say something about it on your Facebook business page and tag their business.

You stop by someone’s shop or job site? Take a quick photo and mention them.

Someone helps you out? Thank them publicly and tag them so others can find them too.

That’s it.

You’re not creating more complex content. You’re just making the content you’re already sharing actually connect people.

Why tagging makes such a big difference

And this is where tagging really matters:

If you’re not tagging the business when you suggest them to others, you’re making that referral harder than it needs to be.

Because now the person reading your post has to go searching for that business. And let’s be honest… most people won’t bother.

Tagging just means using the @ symbol so the name becomes clickable. It gives people a direct path instead of an extra step.

It’s a small shift, but it makes it easy for the person to find the business and that makes a huge difference.

What happens when you start tagging businesses consistently

Here’s the part people don’t always expect…

When you do this consistently, it comes back to you.

You start to become the person who “knows people.” The one who is helpful. The one who connects others.

Your posts tend to get a bit more engagement. Your name comes up more often in conversations. And when someone needs what you do, you’re already in their mind.

Not because you were pushing your services… but because you were showing up.

How this connects to your overall visibility online

Honestly, this ties into a bigger conversation I have with clients all the time.

Everyone is focused on visibility—getting found online, showing up in searches, improving their online presence.

Whether we’re talking about their website, their local SEO, or how they’re showing up on their Google Business Profile… it all comes back to one thing:

How easy is it for people to find you… and connect others to you?

Because visibility isn’t just technical. It’s human.

It’s in the conversations, the recommendations, the little moments where someone says, “You should talk to this person.” Team players are perceived more favourably.

Quick check: can people tag your business?

One quick thing I always suggest—just to make sure you’re not missing out on those moments…

Ask someone you trust to try tagging your business.

If it doesn’t show up easily, or it’s not clickable, that’s something you need to fix.

Because if people can’t tag you, they can’t easily refer you.

And those are the easiest referrals you’ll ever get.

Those who give, gain

At the end of the day, this isn’t about doing more.

It’s about being a little more intentional with what you’re already doing.

If you want more people to see your business, start by helping other businesses get seen.

Tag them.
Support them.
Make it easy for people to connect.

And give it a little time.

You’ll start to notice the shift.
